Spread The Warmth

"Be the change you want to see in the world." Mahatma Gandhi

We all know that times are tough for many Americans. In the spirit of trying to effect change, Horny Toad wants to Spread the Warmth by banding the Toad community together to help those who need it. The clothes taking up space in the back of your closet could keep someone warm this winter. We're asking you to dig deep and give them a new home by donating to an organization that can get them to people in need.

Share: But wait! Give a shout out about where you donated and tell us just how good it feels to give!

Spread the Love

I donate and encourage others to donate what isn't necissary to our possession but could be crucial to another's.

movin and givin

I recently relocated to an off grid home that uses only wind and solar power. It is a smaller house than my condo and I gave boxes and bags of clothes to Goodwill that included some very nice expensive clothes gently worn. I donated furniture and kitchen items also. Many people were warmed by the boots, jackets and warm clothes I donated while downsizing.

How 'bout giving some shirts and some sweat?

Every year I go through my closet, and if I haven't worn it lately I take to the Salvation Army or Goodwill.
I also go on at least two trips a year, one spring and one fall, to do some sort of relief/restoration work. Mississippi to build a house last year, and in a few weeks I'm heading to Charleston to do some work for the elderly.

Some of my favorite people in the world have been met on these trips.

Land of the Free

Happy New Year to all! My sister is moving next month and is having a garage sale this coming weekend. So, I decided to go through all our closets to sell our stuff at her garage sale... until I read the `Spread the Warmth' page on Horny Toads site! I decided to call the Vietnam Veterans of America and donate all our stuff for free. And let me tell you, its A LOT of good stuff, ashamed to say, some have price tags on them still! If it weren't for the Veterans, who would fight for our Freedom. It feels good to give to the people that have given us so much.... OUR FREEDOM!

Another reason to lose weight...

After losing 50 pounds since July, I no longer fit into ANYTHING I owned that is winter-appropriate, from my sweaters and jackets to work wear to even things like mittens (my hands are incredibly narrow now). I took it all to a local center for women in need, and could not have been happier to see how the faces LIT up in the room - in a tough economy, people aren't giving up nice, gently worn things like they used to. According to the center director, who called me today, absolutely everything I brought in two weeks ago has now gone on to a better home!

HOPE and Practical Help - St. Francis House

St. Francis House of Boston, MA (www.stfrancishouse.org) provides clothing, hot meals, medical and mental health services, etc. But what means the most to me is they give individuals a way out of the cycle of poverty, homelessness and unemployment with programs that help individuals change their lives. I am grateful I have been able to give monthly for the last 9+ years as a deduction from my checking account. When I do have gently used clothes that need a new home, St. Francis House is at the top of the list of charities.

Collecting Coats for Schools

I work at Nature's Closet in Bennington, VT and we are a Horny Toad dealer. This October through Thanksgiving we offered customers 20% off any item in the store if they brought a coat in good condition (didn't even need to be washed) to our store.

We gave 100-150 coats to the Mount Anthony Union School District and last winter to the Hoosick Falls Central School District in neighboring New York. We took care of the dry cleaning. Many customers didn't even want the discount, they just wanted to be able to have the coats go directly to the local schools.

I think it's a great way to promote shopping locally, but a great way to give kids and teenagers in our community something warmer then a sweatshirt to wear in our chilly Vermont winters. The impact of this was much larger then something I could've done myself. I'm glad we were able to have such a success.

Goodwill inspires goodwill

Hello. I dug in my closet recently and filled up eight paper grocery bags with sweaters, nightgowns, shirts, corduroys, and more. The Goodwill warehouse is on the corner of my road, so there's no excuse not to go there. I take good care of my clothes, and it makes me happy to think that someone will find my things useful if not lovely. And, giving to Goodwill has helped me simplify my life- no more hanging onto those "someday these will fit" jeans. Live in the now and do good. It feels good.

One of the largest refugee resettlement operations ever by the UN

Most people, like me, associate(d) Bhutan w/ peace & happiness. But I recently found out this is not so. With one sixth of the population in exile, the tiny kingdom of Bhutan has the dubious distinction of being one of the world's highest per capita generator of refugees.

This year the UN has launched resettlement operations. This week I learned that 40 families have arrived in my metropolitan area from Bhutan with essentially nothing. Like most of the 107,000 Bhutanese refugees, they have lingered in refugee camps since 1990.

A yoga studio around the corner from my house has asked for donations & other forms of assitance. It was a no-brainer to get rid of a bunch of warm clothing... Now comes the challenging part of assimilating/adapting to a new culture, finding jobs & everything that comes with starting over & building new lives. They have been & will be resettling though out 40 different states across the country.

Christmas Promise & A Promise to Share

Since I was a little child, my family has participated in Christmas Promise - a local grassroots organizations whereby people can "adopt-a-family" and play Santa by granting their xmas wishes - often times basic necessities like clothes, books, and simple games for the little ones. We're doing it again this year - my husband and I - as our own new christmas tradition (we just got married!). And we're getting some of our friends to join us. It feels so good to buy christmas presents for others, especially those who really need it. And because we've been finding our drawers a little more full, we have also piled several bags full of ready-to-wear clothes to donate to the United Cerebral Palsy association and our local goodwill store (just around the corner from us). It truly brings me the most joy to give to those who need a little help. And it makes me feel even better knowing that there are so many other good people out there (aka Horny Toaders) who are spreading the warmth! Happy Holidays to all!

Now he struggles to walk. He says the absolute worst part is not being able to run around with our five year old son. We are making the best of it and will be okay. Now I cherish the times I have just running and playing with our son; and I try every day to realize that just being able to do that is such a gift---Life changes quickly, make the best of every day you have and focus on the positive!

I remember one Christmas when my mom just didn't have much to give me in the way of presents, these two lovely women from our church came to our house and brought me the cuddliest doll ever. As I've gotten older and lucker, I realize just what a sacrifice those ladies made leaving their families on Christmas to come to our house. Nothing in my life has ever made a bigger impression on me. I've tried to live my life up to the example they set for me and routinely try to donate new and used items to those who are less fortunate, especially at the holidays. There is NO better gift than the feeling of helping someone else!

I had a few old coats for adults and kids and we are planning to donate them to The Water Street Rescur Mission here in Lancaster, PA. They are a homeless and transitional center for anyone who needs them!

Donation pick up

I have scheduled donation pick ups from ARC and we always pass on our used clothes that have not been used in the last 1-2 years. There are always sweaters and pants (and sometimes shoes) that we can pass on to someone else. My husband likes to carry the old coats in his car and hand them off to someone cold on the street when he sees them

Salvation Army Emergency Clothing Bank

There is a place where people can go and get help, that is near my work. I routinely donate nice, well taken care of clothing (on hangers) to them so that people in need can still dress with dignity and respect. If you are NOT using it yourself, there is someone else that needs it and if you don't give it to them, I truly believe you are being wasteful. Please, never give anything to an organization that you would not use or wear yourself.

recycle damnit

The closet of Narnia reaches far into the depths of my wardrobe and sometimes I find clothing back there that is no longer meant for me, but luckily the local university has a clothing swap in which the students bring thier clothes together for a full day extravaganza of exchanging old clothes and recreating a wardrobe of new clothes. All of the clothes left at the end of the day are taken to local charities of the community. What a wonderful way to live and share and love!

recycling helps everybody

We routinely donate clothes, shoes, blankets, toys, etc. to our local hospice organization, a women's and children's shelter, and the Salvation Army. Also, at this time of year, we participate in the Give A Kid a Coat campaign. It's such an easy way to help and folks are sincerely appreciative of your efforts. What's not to like about that?! Thanks, Horny Toad, for encouraging the cause and rewarding the effort!

Starlight Foundation

Hi,
I just donated 2 huge laundry baskets full of infant toys. The toys will be used in hospitals in my community for the sick children. I feel good about it.

Easy ways to Help

We are doubling our donations to Helping Hands, a wonderful organization aiding homebound seniors and homeless. In addition, I travel quite a bit for work and have been saving the hotel mini soaps and shampoos and just dropped off 2 boxes full at Jeffco Action Center for their much-needed personal care kits. An easy way to help!

Many Needs

Their always seems to be something in the closet that's almost like new that just isn't being used. So our family packs bags and give these articles of clothing to the Vietnam Veterans, Gospel Mission and Emma Norton House. KEEP ON SPREADEN!!

Something old, something new...

In our family we have a practice of donating or giving away one item of clothing for any new item we bring home. This keeps us from holding on to things for longer than we need them or want them. Our unwanted sweaters, fleece or pants might be just what someone less fortunate could use. We bring things to Goodwill, Salvation Arny, and local hospital or church charity/thrift shops.

Closer to home

We live pretty far from most organizational drop-offs but when we have furniture or appliances to donate, we often ask the mail lady, meter reader or other locals who come by the house, if they know anyone who could use a good set of bunk beds or kitchen chairs, etc. Helping others is always good, no matter where you do it but doing a little something for people close to home is even better.

Giving to those, who give their lives for us

I recently moved, and decided it was an excellent time to simlify and get rid of everything we no longer wear or use. We sent mounds of household goods and clothing to the Vietnam Veterans of America. I feel good helping someone who sacrificed so much for me.

Working Wardrobes and Goodwill

Office clothing goes to Working Wardrobes to help clothe people entering the white collar workforce, and casual and kid clothing goes to Goodwill.

Across the Border

I clean out my closet about every four months, and when I do I give everything to my wonderful friend Ana who has family in Mexico. She takes my things to a very poor town in Mexico where everything is put to good use.

cleanin house

I just recently moved and I gathered everything that I had not looked at or used in year put it in a box. Just today I took it to my favorite thrift store, "Browse and Buy" It is run by an local episcopal church and they in turn sell the stuff at very cheap "sliding scale" prices. It feels good to have my junk be a treasure for someone else and to lighten my footprint by not trowing it away but reusing. Thanks for the inspiration

My loss, others' gain

I lost weight recently and, while I mourn the investment lost in clothes that don't fit anymore and the dollars required to buy ones that do, it's been a wonderful opportunity to donate bags, more bags and boxes to Goodwill Industries. Goodwill provides jobs and training for people with disabilities and in disadvantaged situations, with the idea that everyone should have the opportunity to live up to their potential.

The homeless Veterans

We freely donate gently used clothing & shoes to the Homeless Veterans rescue mission in Columbia. Our donations seem insignificant to the sacrifces they have made to protect our freedom.

World Food Program

Hi,
Thanks for the GREAT discount!!

I gave to the World Food Program. It is my Charity of choice as it feeds those in need all over the world.

I've already given my old clothes away earlier in the year to shelters in my area. I always try to give to org's like the NRDC and Save the Whale orgs.

It feels good to give! Especially in these tough times when charities will suffer.

Salvation Army

We go through our clothes about three times a year and give them to the Salvation Army. At this time of year we do a careful check for coats, hats and gloves. It is cold in Wiscosnin.

Space for what matters

I live on a boat- so if something goes in... something must go out, or you will drive yourself crazy! As I change my closets from summer to winter then from winter to summer I have a massive: did I wear it this season? or did I buy something new? does it fit perfectly? is it just plain worn out? twice a year I gather my excess and take the bags to the local goodwill drop off. It feels good!

Clean closets and full heart

SO much excess makes for a cluttered life. Letting others have good and useful items makes other people's lives a bit easier but it also reminds me to remember that our society is only as good as the lives of the least of our brothers and sisters. We've got work to do and there is no better time than now to reach out and share from our bounty.

VICODEC - Adopt a Child in Kenya

In addition to donating clothing and other household items to the Community Clothes Closet in our area, we also decided as a family to adopt a needy child abroad. We sponsored a 5 year old child in Ongata Rongai, Kenya through the Victory Community Development Center (VICODEC - US Oil). All of the children awaiting sponsorship live in extreme poverty, most living in mud or tin single-room homes without electricity or water. The needs are great and a sponsorship can be life-changing. Consider this as a family giving opportunity this holiday season. You can select a boy or girl of your choosing (bios are provided on the website) and you will receive email updates and correspondence.

HOLY FAMILY SHELTER - INDIANAPOLIS

Not only are we donating old clothes, we are also supporting the shelter this year, as a company, and donating gifts for the pre-teens and teens that often get left out due to their age.
