Earth Day Playlist

sohlson posted this Tuesday, April 17th, 2012

A quick peek at the history of Earth Day will tell you that it was inspired by an event right here in our hometown.  In 1970, while visiting Santa Barbara after a devastating oil spill ravaged its coast in 1969, Wisconsin senator Gaylord Nelson was so outraged that he organized the day as a rally of awareness and education.  Today it’s an annual celebration of ways reduce our dependency on fossil fuel and live more sustainably on our precious, wild and beautiful planet.

This year Earth Day takes place on Saturday April 21st.  We’ll be at the Santa Barbara festival along with our friends at Sonos, who have put together this great playlist for you to enjoy.  How will you spend Earth Day 2012?

Love Songs From the Bottom of the Bottle

sohlson posted this Friday, February 10th, 2012

Valentine’s Day is not good or evil. Like most things it’s how we perceive the day that determines whether it’s a life affirming romp into the eternal optimism of love in full bloom… or a soul crushing  confirmation that love does, in fact, stink.  This is a playlist for those in the latter camp.  It’s a little beautiful and a lot cheesy, full of guilty pleasures, deep confessions and turgid guitar solos. We hope you will crank it loud, sing along and arrive at the conclusion that, in spite of the ups and downs, it’s pretty awesome to have a heart that can feel so much.  On this Valentine’s Day if we could give you a Necco Conversation Heart, it would say “You Rock.”

Calm Before the Storm

sohlson posted this Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

What’s sweeter than a moment of rest after a long and arduous journey?  That’s what the week after Thanksgiving is like.  It’s Basecamp One when scaling the peak of  never-ending parties.  It’s a filling station on the long stretch of highway between Family Obligations and Scenes from a Shopping Mall.  If the holiday season were a week, this time would be Sunday morning. So pour some wine, light a fire in the fireplace and hit play on our “Calm Before the Storm” playlist, curated to accompany the specific activity of doing nothing.

1 band 1 brand

sohlson posted this Thursday, September 15th, 2011

We’re pretty stoked to be featured alongside Jay Nash on the super cool website 1band 1brand.

If you’re not familiar with our friend Jay you should be – the singer/songwriter is one of our favorites.  His songs are sweet but not mushy.  His voice is beautiful and his wit has just the right amount of edge.  Plus, he’s really, really fun to be around.  And (like our clothing) his style has grown up over the years without growing old.

And if you don’t already know about 1band1brand.com you should get in the loop immediately.  Each week they feature a new pairing of music and fashion with a discount on both.  So get over there, sign up, tell your friends and get the promo code for 10% off Horny Toad for this week only.

Sounds Like August

sohlson posted this Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

From the land of never winter, here’s an end of summer playlist.

These are the songs we think evoke the vibe of last calls and first kisses. Of one last skinny dip & road trip before hunkering down to rake leaves & tune skis. They are the sweet, slightly melancholic sounds of a time when everything seems possible, yet nothing gets taken for granted.

What songs do you think sound like August?  Leave yours in the comments… then throw open the windows, turn up the volume and enjoy!

1. Seu Jorge – Everybody Loves the Sunshine
2. Felix LaBand – Miss Teardrop
3. The Kooks – Shine On
4. The Avett Brothers – I and Love and You
5. Don Henley – Boys of Summer
6. The Allman Brothers – Sweet Melissa
7. Peter Frampton- Baby I Love Your Way (acoustic)
8. Verve – Lucky Man
9. Zap Mama – Rafiki
10. Duffy – Warwick Avenue
11. Neil Young – Out on the Weekend
12. Ray LaMontagne – You Are the Best Thing
