Leap Day

sohlson posted this Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

It’s Leap Year! Some people say the extra day should be used to do good for others, which is right on. But we know that doing good is part of your every day life… and because of that we’ve got another idea.

How about giving this Leap Day to yourself? Take a day off to just be. Or do something you love. Follow what smells good, tastes good, looks good and feels good. Take a nap without guilt. Watch the clouds roll by. Tinker. Stretch. Stand still. Jump up and down. Go to the mountains. Go to the beach. In other words, unplug and take a day to live your life without distraction. It might sound selfish at first, but actually it’s a big win/win because when you feel good you have more to give to others.

Are you in? Post a photo on our Facebook Event Page (check it out here) that captures the essence of how you spent your Leap Day. The entry that gets the most “likes” wins a $366 Horny Toad gift code. Submission deadline is 9AM PST on Friday, March 2.

Tips:

*Ask your friends to “like” your entry. It’s good for you and good karma for them!

*Once you’ve submitted your entry, post a status update on your social media pages. For example:

Facebook: “Vote for my entry in Horny Toad Clothing’s Leap Year contest. If I win I’ll get $366 in Horny Toad Clothing which is handy for you in case you ever need to borrow one of my shirts one day. http://www.facebook.com/events/353596804672018/”

Twitter: “@HornyToadinc is having Leap Year contest. Vote for my entry and I’ll loan you a shirt if you ever need one. http://on.fb.me/wOKbTc”

That’s it. Have fun. Do something amazing with your day.

National Margarita Day

sohlson posted this Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Our friends at EcoSalon reminded us that today is National Margarita Day, and we couldn’t let it pass without contributing Kate’s Superior Margarita recipe.  Cheers!

Kate’s Superior Margarita

2 measures blanco 100% agave tequila

1 measure Cointreau

1 measure Damiana Liqueur

2 measures freshly squeezed key lime juice

1 measure freshly squeezed orange juice (blood orange makes it amazing)

lime wedges & salt

Instructions:  Salt the rims of your glasses. Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker, such as our Toad Traveler, and shake it like you mean it.  Pour over more ice in the salted glasses.

Queso Always Wins

sohlson posted this Friday, February 17th, 2012

If you’re the kind of person who has a “no plastic food” rule you probably need a pretty good reason to break it.  Ellen’s queso will make even the most die-hard purist trample their Michael Pollan books on the way to the dip bowl.  With a Velveeta-esque base, it’s inherently comforting the way a only recipe guarded by generations of female Texans can be. It’s creamy and cheesy with little bursts of sweet salsa and black beans and it goes perfectly with salty tortilla chips.  Plus the flavor is dynamic enough that you never get tired of it.  Ever.

Though it’s dairy-based, queso’s kissing cousin fondue has a whole different vibe.  The melted Gruyère cheese is sweet and nutty, the white wine gives it tang and zest and it’s best served over constant heat, otherwise it seizes up.  You have to dip the chunks of baguette right into the pot and eat them while they’re melty and delicious.  You have to wash it down with a glass of wine.  There’s nothing better after a day of skiing.

Yesterday at lunch we had a Queso vs. Fondue smackdown.  You know, just to see once and for all where our alliances rest.  And while queso got the most votes, it only won by two.

Ellen’s not parting with her queso recipe and she probably never will, so don’t bother asking.  But check back soon for Kate’s amazing fondue recipe.  And if you have a queso recipe you’d be willing to share, we’d be ever so grateful.

Love Songs From the Bottom of the Bottle

sohlson posted this Friday, February 10th, 2012

Valentine’s Day is not good or evil. Like most things it’s how we perceive the day that determines whether it’s a life affirming romp into the eternal optimism of love in full bloom… or a soul crushing  confirmation that love does, in fact, stink.  This is a playlist for those in the latter camp.  It’s a little beautiful and a lot cheesy, full of guilty pleasures, deep confessions and turgid guitar solos. We hope you will crank it loud, sing along and arrive at the conclusion that, in spite of the ups and downs, it’s pretty awesome to have a heart that can feel so much.  On this Valentine’s Day if we could give you a Necco Conversation Heart, it would say “You Rock.”

You know the crumbs at the bottom of a box of dog treats?  Sprinkle ‘em on your dog’s dinner and get outta the way: it’s like Thanksgiving up in that bowl.  Our friends at Santa Barbara-based Puppy Dust have figured out a way to bring your favorite fido that kind of pure joy for every meal.  Made from human food grade ingredients and available in two yummy flavors, Puppy Dust is where it’s at if you’ve got four paws and a tail.

We’re telling you about this because a) We love dogs.  Obviously.  b) We love local businesses who do things the right way, which the people at Puppy Dust are and do and c) Norman made us.
