Warm Current

sohlson posted this Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Check out this cool fundraising campaign by Warm Current – a brilliant non-profit that teaches underserved youth how to surf.

“The best part about running our surf camps is seeing the kids go from a state of apprehension about being in the ocean when we are heading out into the water to being overloaded with excitement and joy when we drag them, most often against their wishes, back to land. I love being a part of helping them connect with nature,” says Warm Current co-founder, Ryan Cruse.

How it works:  between June 27 and July 31, 2011, you can, for $5, purchase a square containing a message or photo that will populate a Faces of Warm Current” mosaic on the side of the kids surf camp trailer. The trailer will be taken to various kids’ surf camps up and down the West Coast for years to come.

The Great Breakfast Burrito Taste-Off

sohlson posted this Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Today at 9:30 a.m., the moment all of us here at Toad HQ have been waiting for finally arrived: The Great Breakfast Burrito Taste Off!

For a long time now there has been an inner-office debate as to which of Santa Barbara’s finest morning Mexi-shacks offers up the best breakfast burrito.

Burritos were judged in two categories: meat & no meat (or as they say at the order counter: ‘NO MEAT??!?!?’)

Special guest judge Kate was provided an eggless tasting, despite contention from other judges that it no longer qualifies as breakfast.

The thing about a breakfast burrito is that, since it’s likely the first thing you’re ingesting that day, it can’t be a gut bomb.  There can’t be too many onions or an overload of salsa.  The flavors must be subtle enough to whet your appetite without overloading your palate, and it must be balanced enough in its proportions to stoke the digestive fires. Like everything, there’s a fine yin/yang to the whole endeavor.

The clear winner in both categories (good to note for those of you who live in Santa Barbara or plan to visit one day), is Taqueria El Refugio.  Known in the office as “the pink taco stand” because it’s, well, pink, El Refugio knocked it out of the park with its well-rounded spices and perfect ratio of potatoes/eggs and either meat or avocado.  The eggless option also included rajas, whose pungency, according to Kate, was the perfect foil to the cooling avo and unctuous, earthy potato.

These would have gone great with an avocado margarita.

mountainfilm report, part 2

sohlson posted this Monday, June 27th, 2011

Do you love movies?  If so, check out this second installment of Mountainfilm highlights from Toad CEO Gordon:

From a team comprised of the directors of two of my all-time favorite past Mountainfilm features (Genghis Blues and I Am, respectively) comes Happy, an exploration of our relationship with this lifelong pursuit. It’s a thoughtful and inspiring collection of stories of happiness, which was also this year’s festival Audience Choice Award.

************************************************************************************

As a longstanding supporter of the festival, Horny Toad was asked to sponsor a new outdoor theater in Telluride Town Park, open to those with or without passes, and definitely one of my favorite parts of this year’s Mountainfilm.  Watching movies while bundled up in the evening mountain chill, sitting on lawn chairs under the starlight, added a wonderful dimension… reminiscent of family drive-in nights. To kick off each evening’s program, recent Mountainfilm episodes of Interviews 50 cents were screened.  And adding to an already special setting, the geniuses behind Mountainfilm orchestrated an “Adrenaline Night” for Saturday evening. Thousands showed up to watch a high octane line-up of adventure shorts.

We’ve said it before, but it’s hard to overstate the awesomeness that is Mountainfilm.  Set in one of the most beautiful places on the planet and full of inspiring folks making world-changing art, it’s well-worth working into your vacation itinerary for next year.

What to drink this Summer

sohlson posted this Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Avocados are food of the gods.  Nutritionally dense with a buttery, creamy texture, they can go sweet or savory (we’ve had a particularly good Vietnamese avocado milkshake and a to-die-for raw chocolate mousse made with cacao and avocado), and, of course, the praises for guacamole are never ending.  Plus, according to ancient Aztecs and modern scientists alike, avocados are an aphrodisiac.

Since it’s summer, and since summer is the season for love and frozen tequila drinks, we think Avocado Margaritas might actually be something of a summer love potion.  Try it out for yourself:

Avocado Margarita

1 ripe and delicious avocado
¼ cup fresh lemon or lime juice
2 cups crushed ice
½ cup tequila
¼ cup triple sec

Mix in a blender. Rub the rim of the glass with lime and dip in a coarse sea salt and chili pepper mix. Sit back with someone special and enjoy the smooth goodness.

If you’re a fan of Horny Toad on Facebook then you know that every new FB friend we made between 4/21 and 6/21 equals a $1 donation to Heal the Bay.  And in case you haven’t heard of HtB, they’re a hard-working and effective non-profit based in Santa Monica, California, dedicated to protecting Southern California’s costal waters and watersheds as well as educating people on the ways our water gets polluted.

To all of you who helped spread the word about our HtB initiative, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.  The fund-raiser ended yesterday, and the result is a $1,350 donation!  We’re happy to help and look forward future efforts in support of this worthy cause.

In the mean time, we encourage you to become inspired by Heal the Bay’s powerful story about how just one person can make an incredible difference in the local community. Report back, tell us where that inspiration leads you.  We’ll try our best to have a story for you, too.

Mountainfilm Report, Part 1

sohlson posted this Monday, June 20th, 2011

Mountainfilm has come and gone again, but some of the films will be appearing in theaters nation-wide.  Check out Toad CEO Gordon Seabury’s Mountainfilm report, part 1:

I always look forward to my annual Memorial Day weekend pilgrimage to Telluride.  It’s a chance to breathe in the fresh air of my favorite mountain town and be renewed by the art, culture and stories that are Mountainfilm.  This year did not fail to inspire all who went, so I thought I owed it to the great people behind the festival to share just a few of the many highlights from this year’s line-up.

While NPR beat me to reviewing the amazing documentary Buck, it deserves another mention.  This film about Buck Brannaman, the true horse whisperer, is not what it appears.  I arrived expecting a story about a man’s unique relationship with horses and came away with an evolved perspective on being a good husband, father and adult.  He is an amazing person with a captivating story that (lucky for all) will soon be released in theaters on a limited basis – definitely catch it if you have the chance!

Fathers Day Contest Winners

sohlson posted this Thursday, June 16th, 2011

When I was a kid my father could always make me laugh by cracking a fart joke.  Heck, I’m still the first one to giggle if someone accidentally breaks wind in yoga class.  Looks like I’m not the only one whose sense of humor is easily won over by a misplaced bodily function.

The votes are in for our father’s day “best saying” contest, and we have a winner.  In fact, we have two, because we decided to give the runner-up a prize as well.  Notice a similarity in theme:

First prize winner gets $100 worth of Toad clothes.  Thanks Chantee for this gem that received 19 “likes”:  “Don’t piss in my ear and tell me it’s raining.”

And second prize goes to Alicia, whose very popular dad quote earned her 17 “likes.”  She gets a free Toad shirt of her choosing for this: “What’s the ‘we’ shit? Do you have a turd in your pocket?”

There were so many good ones, if you haven’t read through them yet, it’s worth the time.  Thanks for your submissions, everyone.  Don’t forget to love your dad up right this Sunday.  And in case you missed it, you might want to read this hilarious essay by the author of the Sh*t My Dad Says blog:
